How to read point spreads

Point spreads can come in several formats.

Favorite/Underdog format

In the following example both a favorite and an underdog is listed. The value listed is the amount by which the favorite is expected to win by. Thus, in the example Kansas City would have to win by more than 5 points to "cover" the spread and pay for bets placed on this team, otherwise bets placed on Atlanta, the underdog, will win.

Favorite
Underdog
Kansas City 5 Atlanta

Numerical Favorite/Underdog format

In the example below, you'll notice that Kansas City has a "+5" next to it. This indicates that this team is a five point favorite and that they'll have to win by more than 5 points for bets placed on them to pay.

Kansas City +5
Atlanta
